Jurusan kedokteran hewan adalah bidang ilmu yang hampir sama tuanya dengan kedokteran manusia. Menurut situs Fakultas Kedokteran Universitas Hasanuddin, awalnya ia merupakan pengembangan dari ilmu kedokteran yang memerlukan perbandingan serta memerlukan hewan untuk uji coba dalam menemukan penyakit manusia.
Dalam menjadi seorang veteriner atau orang yang memiliki kompetensi khusus mengurus hewan, seseorang wajib mendapat gelar Sarjana Kedokteran Hewan (SKH) kemudian melanjutkan sutid pada Pendidikan Profesi Dokter Hewan (PPDH) sebelum menjadi seorang dokter hewan (drh).
Setelah lulus, lulusan kedokteran hewan bisa membuka praktik dokter hewan, konsultan, atau berwirausaha peternakan.
